Sixth grade Californian girl Ananya Vinay wins the coveted spelling bee competition
Ananya Vinay, a sixth grade student from Fresno, CA is this year's spelling bee national champion. She won the 90th Scripps Spelling Bee competition in the 18th round of the final with the last few rounds against another prodigy, Rohan Rajeev. Rohan lost the competition when he misspelled the word "marram". Ananya correctly spelt the word "gifblaar" before winning with the word "marocain". This year breaks away from the last three years when the championship was shared by the last two contestants. Ananya mentioned in her abc's Good Morning America that she would split the money with her little brother and save it in her college fund. The event was sponsored and telecast on "ESPN" on June 1, 2017.
