Rahul Ramachandran wins special award for "Excellence in Innovation of Scientific Design"

Rahul’s design was selected to advance to the Regional and State Science Fair. In the State Science Fair held at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL, Rahul won the “Best in Category” award in Mathematics and also “Excellence in Innovation of Scientific Design”, a corporate award.

Rahul Ramachandran, an 8th grade student at Scullen Middle School, won “Best in Category for Mathematics” and a Special Award for “Excellence in Innovation of Scientific Design”. His project, titled “Developing an Algorithm to Calculate a Figure’s Characteristics”, aimed to develop a computer program that would calculate the center, side length, and angle of rotation of various figures. His program implemented the random walk method by making randomized movements from a point within the shape and stopping at points where there was a change of intensity. Rahul developed the idea after showing an interest in both mathematics and computer science. Once he expressed this interest to his mentor, Ram Laksnarain, he selected this project as it encompassed  his interests. As of now, image recognition techniques are not very efficient, and his project intended to advance these techniques. The techniques proposed by his project help to identify objects along with their statistics much more efficiently. In the future, Rahul hopes that his program can be implemented, where they will strengthen security, traffic management, drivers assistance, and medical imaging devices.
